Rethymnon is the 3rd largest town in Crete. Its main attraction is the old venetian ottoman quarter, a maze of narrow streets with venetian monuments and a variety of shops selling locally produced souvenirs, leather, jewellery and pottery. With a long, hotel lined, sandy beach that offers umbrellas, sunbeds and water sports, it is easy to see why Rethymnon is becoming a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.

10km away from Rethymnon is the tiny hamlet of Agia Paraskevi, where the ‘Oasis' apartments and villas are situated. The village stands on the hillside overlooking the sea and olive groves, and has been described as the ultimate place to unwind. A once deserted settlement, it has been restored by the Cretans over the past 25 years and now boasts a small café and mini market in the village square. Ligres beach, a 5 minute drive away, is a quiet pebbled beach, with a small hotel and tavern serving food and drinks in peak season.

Weather and climate

The climate in Crete is typically Mediterranean. There are two main seasons: A dry, hot summer (May - October) and a damp, rainy winter (November - April). Spring announces its presence with an abundance of magnificent wild flowers. Rainfall is higher on the mountains and snow can be seen on the peaks until june. The temperature on the plains seldom falls to freezing point and snow is rare. The temperature along the shores of the Libyan sea is high in the summer, while the "meltemia " (prevailing north winds, often strong) make the northern shores pleasantly cool from mid- June to the beginning of September. As a result of the ground structure, there is a great difference in climate between the three main areas: the northern coast, the southern coast and the mountainous area.
